such was general burnside's ineptitude that no numerical advantage was sufficient to guarantee a victory.
during one civil war campaign, burnside unveiled a wily plan to dynamite a trench along which his men could safely advance into the middle of the confederate camp. as the dust cleared, they ran in - and were dismayed to discover that they could not climb out. the confederates were naturally delighted to find a sizeable union force trapped at their feet in a six foot ditch.
on learning of the fiasco, president lincoln remarked, "only burnside could have managed such a coup, wringing a spectacular defeat from the jaws of victory."
