The battle of Otumba in 1520 was a pivotal event in Spain's conquest of Mexico. The Aztecs fielded a vast army on the plain of Otumba against the Spaniards under Herman Cortes. Cortes saw in the middle of the throng an important-looking personage who he knew must be the commander of the Aztecs, and immediately made for him with several of his horsemen, charging through the ranks of Aztec warriors. In a few minutes they were in the presence of the commander and killed him: his guard, overpowered by the suddenness of the onset, made little resistance. Cortes then raised the captured battle standard, which the Aztecs believed housed their God. The loss of the standard signalled to the Aztecs that the battle standard flown by the Spaniards housed a stronger God. Filled with consternation, they now thought only of escape, and trampled on one another, their numbers augmenting their confusion.
