in 1649, during the english civil war, oliver cromwell, leader of the parliamentarians, besieged drogheda. the town was defended by sir arthur aston, a royalist commander.
aston had only one leg. in 1645, he was thrown from his horse while trying to impress a group of ladies with his horsemanship. he broke his leg, which turned gangrenous and had to be amputated. his enemies claimed this as an act of divine vengeance for aston's action in ordering one of his own men to have his hand sawn off in punishment for some minor indiscretion. aston furiously maintained that he was as good on one leg as any man on two, but when cromwell's men sacked drogheda he had his brains knocked out by a soldier wielding his own wooden leg.
