一只河蚌張開蚌殼，在河灘上曬太陽。有只鷸(yù)鳥，從河蚌身邊走過，就伸嘴去啄河蚌的肉。河蚌急忙把兩片殼合上，把鷸嘴緊緊地鉗住。鷸鳥用盡力氣，怎么也拔不出嘴來。蚌也脫不了身，不能回河里去了。河蚌和鷸鳥就爭吵起來。鷸鳥說：“一天、兩天不下雨，沒有了水，回不了河，你總是要死的!”河蚌也說：“假如我不放你，一天、兩天之后，你的嘴拔不出去，你也別想活，總要餓死!”河蚌和鷸鳥吵個不停，誰也不讓誰。這時，恰好有個打魚的人從那里走過，就把它們兩個一起捉去了。現在用來比喻雙方相持不下，結果兩敗俱傷，讓第三者得利。
A Snipe and a Clam Locked in Combat
