the battle of lepanto in 1571 was an important naval battle between the turks and the christian forces commanded by don john. during the struggle between the two flagships locked together, don john ’ s pet marmoset joined in the fighting. noticing a live grenade land on his master ’ s decks, he scampered across and dropped it overboard - some accounts even suggesting that he threw it back onto the turkish flagship.
