adlai stevenson, us delegate to the united nations, visited dallas, texas, in 1963. he was met by a jeering crowd of demonstrators. the crowd got a bit out of hand. a woman hit stevenson on his head with a placard, and a man struck him across the cheek.
the police were ready to arrest the two demonstrators on charges of assault, but stevenson said no. he did not want them punished. as he commented later, “ i didn't want them to go to jail. i thought it would be better if they went to school. ”
