during world war ii, with desperate labour shortages in germany, the nazis introduced a forced-labour programme in occupied europe. a dutch lady recalled the following event.
"when the doorbell rang there were two germans. both came upstairs. one stayed at the top of the stairs and the other came into the room. he looked around and the two men who were there had to get dressed and go with them.
"we being women were crying, both of us, one woman with a baby in her arms and another hanging on her skirt. the one german inside the room was crying too, and he said,'i'm so terribly sorry, but i'm not alone. i'd love to be able to help you but i can't do anything because there's someone with me.' he really cried-- big tears rolling down his face."
