nazi german army officer claus von stauffenberg was a catholic appalled by the brutality of the nazi regime. in 1942, he conspired with a group of disenchanted fellow officers to kill hitler.
on 20 july 1944, he was summoned to attend a briefing at the wolf's lair, hitler's command post for the eastern front in prussia. stauffenberg carried a bomb in a briefcase, and placed it under the conference table beside hitler. a few minutes later, he left the room with the excuse of taking a phone call. instead he left the building and drove away. unfortunately, another army officer attending the briefing found the briefcase in his way, and moved it to one side away from hitler. the bomb exploded, killing four people, but hitler was only slightly injured. on 21 july, stauffenberg was executed by firing squad at 12:30 am.
