mauthausen concentration camp was a group of 49 nazi concentration camps situated in austria. it was mainly used for extermination through labour of germany's political and ideological enemies, both real and imagined. between august 1938 and may 1945, an estimated 195,000 persons, men and women, were forced into the camp, and at least 95,000 of them died.
when the inmates were totally exhausted after having worked in a deep stone quarry for 12 hours a day, they were transferred to the sick barracks for extermination. it was the practice of those who could stand it no longer to go to the top of the quarry and jump off. two jewish brothers decided to take their lives and shook hands with their friends before making the climb. at the top they met two ss guards and shook hands with them too-- they held on tight and jumped, each taking an oppressor with him.
