the british retreat from mons in southern belgium at the beginning of the first world war stretched the nerves of officers and men to breaking point. there were occasions when chaos reigned, as in the town of landrecies on 25 august, when a senior officer apparently took leave of his senses and began firing his revolver down a street. when a nearby military policeman was asked why he did not stop him, he said the officer was a colonel and as the only things that were in danger down the street were horses, including the colonel's own, he thought it was better to let the old gentleman get it out of his system.
