mercy killings in wartime, though frowned on by the medical profession, are nevertheless for more common than is generally realised. in 1536, as the french army broke into turin, italy, the famous french surgeon, ambrose pare, saw three badly burned soldiers, suffering in terrible agony. an old soldier asked if there was any means of curing them. pare replied that there was none. at once the soldier approached them and cut their throats gently. pare shouted at him that he was a villain, but he replied that he hoped someone would do the same for him should he be in such a state, so that he would not be in pain.
