During the First World War, the Germans never felt that the Tommies took war seriously enough. In the battle of Passchendaele in 1917, a German field gun had targeted a British tank, on top of which an infantryman had hitched a lift. Suddenly a shell exploded above the tank and dozens of steel balls rained down. Some watching British soldiers waited to see the passenger fall dead from his perch. But he emerged unhurt from the deadly hail of shrapnel and, cupping his hands to his mouth, yelled to the tank commander inside, "Hi, conductor! Any room inside? It's raining."
第 一 次 世 界 大 戰(zhàn) 期 間 ， 德 國 人 總 覺 得 英 國 士 兵 的 戰(zhàn) 爭 態(tài) 度 不 夠 認 真 。 一 九 一 七 年 帕 斯 真 戴 爾 之 役 ， 德 軍 野 戰(zhàn) 炮 瞄 準 一 輛 英 國 坦 克 ， 當 時 有 個 步 兵 要 搭 便 車 ， 爬 了 到 車 頂 上 。 一 枚 炮 彈 忽 然 在 坦 克 上 方 爆 炸 ， 幾 十 顆 鋼 丸 雨 點 般 落 下 來 。 一 些 英 國 士 兵 在 旁 看 見 ， 以 為 那 搭 便 車 的 家 伙 會 從 車 頂 上 滾 下 來 一 命 嗚 呼 。 不 料 炮 彈 碎 片 雖 然 追 魂 索 命 ， 那 士 兵 卻 絲 毫 無 損 ， 窩 起 兩 只 手 掌 放 在 嘴 邊 ， 向 坦 克 車 的 指 揮 官 高 喊 ： 「 喂 ， 車 掌 ， 面 有 空 位 嗎 ？ 現(xiàn) 在 下 雨 啊 。 」 【 解 說 】 Tommy 是 Thomas 的 昵 稱 。 十 九 世 紀 時 ， 英 國 軍 用 表 格 有 些 填 好 的 樣 本 供 士 兵 參 考 ， 簽 名 處 一 律 寫 Thomas Atkins ， 所 以 英 國 士 兵 俗 稱 Tommy 或 tommy 。 Shrapnel 是 炮 彈 等 炸 開 后 飛 出 的 碎 片 ， hail 則 是 冰 雹 ， 常 引 伸 解 作 「 一 陣 」 或 「 一 場 」 ， 例 如 ： He greeted me with a hail of abuse （ 他 一 見 到 我 ， 就 破 口 大 罵 ） 。 A hail of shrapnel 即 「 冰 雹 般 落 下 來 的 炮 彈 碎 片 」 。
