古德明《征服英語》之英語軍事故事，古德明，香港英語教育作家，他開了一個《征服英語專欄》，在專欄中專門用英語寫了世界近代史上的軍事小故事，用英語講述歷史中那些驚心動魄的戰爭。天 助 羅 馬In AD 173, a Roman army was surrounded by a Germanic tribe, the Quadi. Unable to fight or retreat, the Romans were dying of thirst when suddenly clouds gathered and a mighty rain burst upon them. All turned their faces upwards and received the water in their mouths, and some held up their shields or helmets to catch it. The Quadi now charged upon them, and drinking and fighting at the same time the Romans would have suffered severely, had not a violent hailstorm and numerous thunderbolts fallen upon the ranks of the foe. Thus water and fire were descending from the sky simultaneously, so that while those on the one side were being drenched and drinking, the others were being consumed by fire and dying. The Romans, it seemed, were saved by a divine power.
公 元 一 七 三 年 ， 一 支 羅 馬 軍 隊 被 日 耳 曼 夸 族 人 包 圍 ， 既 不 能 戰 ， 又 不 能 退 ， 眼 看 要 活 活 渴 死 ， 突 然 烏 云 四 合 ， 大 雨 向 他 們 傾 盆 而 下 ， 他 們 都 抬 起 頭 ， 張 口 喝 水 ， 有 些 還 把 盾 牌 、 頭 盔 舉 起 來 盛 雨 。 夸 人 這 時 向 他 們 進 攻 ， 羅 馬 兵 一 邊 喝 水 一 邊 抗 敵 ， 死 傷 應 十 分 慘 重 ， 但 暴 風 起 處 ， 冰 雹 夾 連 綿 雷 電 向 夸 軍 隊 襲 去 。 一 時 間 ， 水 、 火 一 起 從 天 而 降 ， 一 邊 的 羅 馬 人 戰 袍 盡 濕 ， 不 斷 喝 水 ； 另 一 邊 的 夸 人 被 火 焚 燒 ， 紛 紛 死 亡 。 羅 馬 軍 似 乎 獲 神 靈 保 佑 ， 得 免 覆 沒 。
【 附 注 】 AD 是 「 公 元 后 」 ， BC 是 「 公 元 前 」 。 BC 習 慣 寫 在 年 分 之 后 ， AD 則 英 式 英 文 寫 在 年 分 之 前 ， 美 式 英 文 寫 在 年 分 之 后 ， 例 如 201 BC （ 公 元 前 二 ○ 一 年 ） 、 AD 201 / 201 AD （ 公 元 二 ○ 一 年 ） 。
