during julius caesar's first invasion of britain in 55 bc the roman soldiers hung back in their boats, horrified by the barbaric antics of the britons waiting on the shore to fight them, and frightened by the depth of the sea. the eagle-bearer of the tenth legion, after a prayer to heaven, cried in a loud voice, "jump down, soldiers, unless you wish to betray your eagle to the enemy. it shall be told that i at any rate did my duty to my country and my general." with that he cast himself from his ship and began to bear the eagle against the enemy.
seeing this, the roman soldiers exhorted one another not to allow so dire a disgrace, and leapt down from the ships with one accord, and drew near to the enemy.
