at the end of the mexican war in 1848, general william tecumseh sherman was sent to survey the lands of new mexico and arizona, which the americans had won from the mexicans.
on his return president taylor asked sherman what he thought of the lands. had they been worth fighting for? recalling the arid lands from which he had just returned, sherman replied, "between you and me, sir, i feel that we'll have to go to war again."
taylor was horrified. "what for?" he exclaimed.
"to make them take the darn country back," said sherman.
