after the british defeated the zulus at kambula in 1879, colonel evelyn wood interrogated the prisoners. when he had obtained the information required, he said, "previously, we treated all your wounded men in our hospital. but when you attacked our camp, our black patients rose and helped to kill those who had been attending on them. can you advance any reason why i should not kill you?"
"there is a very good reason," said a young zulu with an intelligent face. "we kill you because it is the custom of the black men. but it isn't the white men's custom."
wood had no answer to this and had the men placed under guard before eventually freeing them.
