during the 18th century the punishment of flogging was very common in the british army. it could be imposed for the most absurd of reasons.
on one occasion, a company major was giving a reading at church parade. his broad yorkshire accent amused some of the men and when he read the words “ suffered under pontius pilate, one of the men, a known wag, muttered, “ what's ponchews peelatt? ” the officer heard the comment, and turned to look at the culprit. “ up to your old tricks again, are you jock? ” the major summoned jock to a drumhead court-martial at which he was sentenced to one hundred lashes. once the flogging was completed, the major returned to his text, “ now where was i? oh, that's right...suffered under pontius pilat. ”
