general metaxas, greek dictator in the 1930s, was highly unpopular with the people, who loved to celebrate his faux pas. he once undertook an inspection of an air base and was invited to try out a new seaplane. he eagerly took it for a short flight and, coming in, was about to land on a runway when the airbase commander broke in from the control tower to say, "excuse me, general, it'd be better to put the aircraft down on the water as it's a seaplane." swerving away at the last moment metaxas made another circuit and then landed safely on the water. switching off the engine he radioed his thanks to the control tower. "thank you, commander, for preventing me from making a complete fool of myself." he then opened the door and stepped straight out into the sea.
