at the battle of new orleans in 1815 between the british and the americans, the british quartermaster, william surtees, witnessed a shell land in the british encampment and blow off both legs of a lieutenant named darcy, who was asleep at the time. rudely awakened to his plight, darcy assured surtees that his sympathy was misplaced. had he only lost one leg there would have been cause for regret as he would not have been entitled to any financial compensation. but having lost two legs he was entitled to a double pension and would live like a prince.
