during the 15th century, the development of artillery made medieval fortifications obsolete. the turkish sultan mehmet Ⅱ , for instance, offered a skilled gun-maker named orban a great reward if he could design an enormous cannon to breach the walls of constantinople. orban responded with a gun of staggering size. when it fired, it was said, women miscarried ─ ─ but so did the gun. it cracked on the fifth day. nevertheless, orban's other guns soon wrecked constantinople's walls.
the turkish obsession with big guns continued into the 16th century. in 1516, a turkish galley equipped with a huge gun attacked some portuguese ships. the recoil from the gun was so great that the galley turned turtle and sank with all hands.
