the french army suffered terribly from heat during napoleon's egyptian campaign. even murat and lannes threw themselves on the sand and gave way to despair. in the midst of the general depression a sudden hope illuminated the countenances of the soldiers : a lake appeared in the arid wilderness, with a village and palm trees reflected in its glassy surface. the parched troops hurried towards the enchanting object, but it receded from their steps. the troops had the mortification of discovering that they had been deceived by a mirage.
拿 破 侖 征 埃 及 ， 法 軍 難 當(dāng) 苦 熱 ， 連 繆 拉 、 拉 納 都 志 頹 氣 喪 ， 撲 倒 黃 沙 上 。 將士 正 自 委 靡 不 堪 ， 突 然 看 到 希 望 ， 笑 逐 顏 開 ： 在 一 片 干 旱 荒 漠 之 中 ， 出 現(xiàn) 了 一 個 湖， 水 平 如 鏡 ， 有 村 落 、 棕 櫚 樹 倒 映 其 上 。 唇 枯 舌 燥 的 法 軍 連 忙 向 這 迷 人 景 象 走 去 ，不 料 他 們 越 往 前 走 ， 那 景 象 越 往 后 退 。 法 軍 終 于 發(fā) 覺 是 被 海 市 蜃 樓 騙 了 ， 都 悵 然 若失 。
