during the mexican war of 1846, an american column was about to begin its march from texas. a young officer of pronounced literary tastes, lieutenant graham, dared to load one of the wagons with a case of books. colonel william whistler was horrified. he told the young man, “ we can't encumber our train with such rubbish as books. ” another young lieutenant, charles hoskins, standing nearby overheard the colonel's words and hastened to tell him that he had consigned a keg of whisky in the wagon without permission.
“ oh that's all right, mr hoskins, ” said the affable colonel, “ anything in reason. but graham there wanted to carry a case of books! ”
