the battle of lake erie was fought in 1813 during the war of 1812 between the us and britain. the british fleet consisted of six ships armed mostly with cannons, while the us fleet comprised nine ships armed primarily with carronades.
during the battle, the us flagship was reduced to a floating wreck. every gun on her engaged side was disabled, and four of every five men were either killed or wounded. making a bold decision, oliver perry, commander of the us fleet, abandoned his flagship and rowed a half mile through heavy gunfire to the uss niagara, and again sailed towards the british line. he eventually drove the british fleet to surrender.
