during the first world war, the "white feather" campaign pursued by many women in britain caused great bitterness to men, as may be seen in the following account by private ernest atkins : "on one occasion, i had changed into my civvy clothes and was going to visit my parents. i hear on the tram girls giggling behind me. a girl touches my shoulder and hands me a white feather. i get up and, taking out my pay book, smack it across her face and say,'certainly i'll take your feather back to the boys at passendale.' "
