A Fright for Tiger
There was once a bold, bad tiger who lived in the hot sunny land of India. Tiger loved to frighten people, and every day he came prowling round a village.
Just outside the village was a tall tree. High in its branches sat a little boy, watching for the tiger. Whenever the tiger came that way the boy beat a drum-then all the men and women, boys and girls, dogs and cats, goats and hens, rushed indoors together, and stayed inside until the drum sounded again to tell them that the tiger had gone.
Now the boy who sat in the tree grew tired of his work, he wanted to play with the other boys, and bathe in the river as well. No one had ever been able to catch the tiger, or drive it away, but the little boy decided to try.
That night, when he was at home, the boy began to make a horrible snake.
At last the snake was finished and taken to the tree. Up into the branches climbed the boy, then he sat in his place, holding the snake by the tail. Before long Tiger came prowling. “Take care, Tiger,” called the boy, then, still holding the snake by the tail, he swung it down in front of Tiger's nose. Tiger the saw the horrible face, the gaping mouth, the fanged teeth, and this time he was afraid. With a roar, he turned and fled. He ran and ran and didn't stop until he was far, far away.
From that day, Tiger never went back to the village, so the little boy was free to play with the other boys instead, which he liked much, much better!
