A Friend in Need
The little Nibblit family, who lived in a cornfield close to the river, were having great fun.
The sun was shining brightly, and soon the little Nibblits felt very warm.
Just then Benjy sniffed the air.
“I smell smoke!” he said.
“So do I,” cried Milly.
Sure enough the cornfield was blazing like a bonfire.
The flames quickly spread across the field. In a very few moments all the corn would be burned, the Nibblit family and all!
Just then Sally, the swan, came swimming down the stream. She had not forgotten how kind Daddy Nibblit had been to her. Not long ago, he had saved the lives of her little ones by warning them of a hungry hawk.
At once Sally swam up to the bank, where the Nibblit family stood trembling, and told them to jump on her back.
“We are saved!” cried Daddy Nibblit. “Sally will carry us to safety.”
Sally swam gracefully across the wide river, like a ship in full sail.
“Well, here we are,” said Daddy Nibblit.
Sally flapped her wings, waggled her tail, and sailed down the river. As the little Nibblits waved goodbye to her, they knew she would come to see them again very soon.
