Lazybones and the Lettuce
Lazybones lived with his father and mother and three brothers on the edge of a large wood.
One day his brother, Flippitt, came running into the burrow.
“Guess what I have seen,” he panted. “Rows and rows of large green lettuces.”
“Where?” asked Lazybones.
“Down in the garden at the bottom of the meadow.”
“Then what are we waiting for?” cried Furry. And away the little bunnies raced across the field-all except Lazybones!
The bunnies ate such a lot that, one by one, they fell asleep.
All at once there was a sound of wheels and the market cart came jolting along the road and turned in at the gates. Butch, the bull terrier, barked and rattled his chain as he leapt up and down trying to get free.
“Steady, Butch,” said the man. “What's the matter? Wait a moment while I undo your chain. There, now you may go.”
As soon as Butch was free he bounded down the path and through the kitchen garden. The bunnies, who were now wide awake, ran as fast as they could towards the fence with Butch after them, and they didn't stop until they were safe in their own snug burrow by the wood.
When they had got over their fright they crept out into the field again. To their surprise, what should they see but Lazybones, sprawled on the grass, nibbling a large juicy lettuce.
“Where did you get that?” cried Floppitt.
“The man gave it to me as he was passing,” said Lazybones.
As a matter of fact, the juicy lettuce had fallen off the market cart on to the road just near their field and Lazybones had found it as he was taking a stroll, but he wasn't going to tell his brothers how he really got it.
