Woodland Dreams
“It's all very well - but they might have asked me,” said Billy, as he sat on the edge of the stream dangling his feet in the water. He was feeling very hot and angry inside, because his bigger brother and sister had been asked out to a party, and he was left at home because he was too little.
All at once someone brushed past him.
“You might be careful,” said Billy, not knowing or caring who it might be. But think of his surprise when a brown rabbit stopped and cried:
“Sorry! But I am in such a hurry!”
Billy rubbed his eyes, and there were other little woodland folk hurrying along.
As a family of moles passed, Billy called out:
“Hi! Where are you going?” The moles turned round and stared.
“To the Woodland Summer Party. We have one every year.”
“Do you think I could come?” asked Billy.
“Well, you are rather big, but come along and we will see.”
To his joy he was allowed in, and already there were rows of animals of all sorts and sizes seated at long tables laden with delicious food.
The moles and Billy said they were sorry for being late, and hurried to their places. There was such a pile of good things to eat, and the little rabbit waiters were serving them and handing them round.
“Will you have blancmange, either or both?”
Billy felt puzzled. Before he could make up his mind what to have, he woke up! He was still sitting on the bank of the stream with his feet dangling in the water. But he did not feel a bit cross when his mother called him in to tea.
“Be quick, Billy. We are having ice-cream and jelly!”
Well, you can guess what a wonderful tea he really had!
