audie murphy was the most decorated soldier in american history. in january 1945, he was serving as company commander in eastern france. one cold morning, near the village of holzwihr, he saw 250 german infantrymen and six tanks bearing down on him. and he had only 19 men left in his company.
murphy sent his men back to take defensive positions behind him. alone, he mounted an abandoned burning tank destroyer, and employed its machine gun against the enemy. for nearly an hour, he was exposed to german fire from three sides, but his deadly fire killed dozens of germans, and the enemy tanks, losing infantry support, had to fall back.
