The Flowers
One day, Louis, finding himself in the garden with his sisters, came to a halt before a rose tree and said: “For me the rose is the most beautiful of all flowers.” Caroline, in her turn, said: “The lily that you see there in that flowerbed, is as beautiful as the rose and therefore I say that those are the most beautiful flowers; the others in comparison are nothing.”
“What?” interrupted little Luisa. “Are those lovely violets to be despised? They are so beautiful and last spring they were such a joy for us.”
Their mother who had been listening to the children, said to them: “The three flowers that please you so much are wonderful images and symbols of three precious virtues: the violet with its modest turchese color is the symbol of modesty, the candid lily is the symbol of innocence and the flaming rose in its own language tells you that your heart must burn with goodness and love towards God. The most precious gifts of youth are humility, goodness and purity.”
