on 4 july 1940, hms foylebank was anchored off portland, england. the majority of her crew were at breakfast when unidentified aircraft were reported to the south. these were at first thought to be allied aircraft returning to base, but they turned out to be 26 of germany's most feared dive bombers intent on"getting" the foylebank.leading seaman jack marie was in charge of the starboard pom-pom. early in action, his left leg was shattered by a bomb, but he remained at his gun, and went on firing with hand-gear only when the ship's electric power failed. his courage bore him up till the end of the fight, when he fell by his gun and died
.＊一九四○年七月四日，英國皇家海軍戰艦福伊爾班克號停泊英格蘭波特蘭市附近。艦上大部分船員在吃早餐的時候，有報告說南方出現來歷未明的飛機。大家以為那只是盟軍飛機返回基地，不料卻是二十六架德國最可怕的俯沖轟炸機，而且是以福伊爾班克號為目標。上等水兵杰克．瑪里負責右舷的高射機關炮，開戰后不久，左腿被炸彈炸得血肉模糊，但他堅守岡位，繼續發炮，到船上電力中斷，就改用全人工操作，憑著勇氣，撐到戰斗結束，這才倒在機關炮旁，一瞑不視。
附注：
＊福伊爾班克號在戰斗中受到重創，敵機退卻后，不久即告沉沒。
