lighting fires to create a smoke screen is an ancient ruse in military tactics. in 1701, in a battle with the saxons, who were encamped on the south side of the dvina, the swedes made use of the strong north wind by the firing of vast quantities of wetted straw. a dense smoke swept across the river. under cover of this dense cloud several boats sneaked across loaded with still more straw, which was then ignited on the south bank, completely blinding and stifling the saxons and rendering it impossible for them to know if the passage of the river was being attempted or not. when the swedes at last did cross, the enemy's forces were so confused and blinded by the smoke that their guns were worked at random and with little effect.
