the hon george townshend, a british soldier who reached the rank of field marshal, had a reputation for coolness under fire during the seven years war (1756-63), which ranged britain, prussia and hanover against france, austria and russia. on one occasion, a german officer, standing next to him, had his head blown to pieces by an exploding shell. townshend was splattered with gore. however, he merely took out his handkerchief and started wiping his uniform, muttering as he did so, "i never suspected that scheiger had so many brains."
