when mussolini led italy into world warⅡ, among the most prominent slogans of italian fascism were the words"believe! obey! fight!" children at school began every day by chanting the fascist ten commandments, one of which ran,"mussolini is always right." however, despite mussolini's efforts to promote his cult of violent action, italy's cultural traditions endured. the liberal philosopher benedetto croce campaigned against the regime and, though his home was sacked by fascist thugs, mussolini never dared to forbid him to publish.
in july 1943, when news was announced that mussolini was arrested by the king, crowds danced in the streets of rome. the whole edifice of mussolini's regime collapsed in the capital with so little regret that not a single man died trying to stop the overthrow.
