at the beginning of world war ii, most british generals were reluctant to have foreign fighter pilots. but because of the need for more soldiers, they had to allow it. it turned out that some of the best performing fighter pilots were foreigners. in the battle of britian in 1940, when the raf battled it out against the luftwaffe in the skies over southern england, the top scorer on both sides was a czech, josef frantisek.
also in the raf was a belgian named jean de selys. as members of his family had been murdered by the gestapo, the war was very personal for him. in 1943, he disregarded orders and flew alone into a nazi-occupied city to strafe the gestapo building where his father was executed, and then dropped a funeral wreath.
