從前，在街市上，住著一個名叫滿意的人。有一次，他買到一顆徑長一寸的聞所未聞的大珍珠。特別喜歡就藏了起來。滿意有個鄰居名叫壽量，他在路上發(fā)現(xiàn)一顆很大的魚眼睛，便誤以為是珍珠就撿回家收藏。事有湊巧，不久兩人都得了一種奇怪的病，臥床不起。一日街上走來一個游方郎中，診斷后說他們兩人都需要用珍珠的粉末和藥材才能治好。他們都把自己的珍珠拿出來讓郎中看，滿意打開盒子，郎中嘆道：“果然是罕見珍寶！”，但是看到壽量的“珍珠”時，大笑著說：“這哪是什么珍珠，這是海洋中一種大魚的眼睛。真是魚目混珠，這哪能治好你的病啊！”
魚目混珠比喻以假亂真，以次充好。
Passing Off Fish Eyes as Pearls
In the Han Dynasty (hàn cháo 漢朝), there was a Taoist called Wei Boyang who wrote a book on the making of pills of immortality. In this book there is the following line:” Fish eyes can’t be passed off as pearls, and bitter flea-bane can’t pretend to be tea.” Fish eyes look like pears, but are valueless.
This idiom is used to mean passing off the sham as the genuine.
