As the saying goes, “Respect others and you will be respected.” It indicates that respect is mutual, which reminds me that it is a premise that we earn our own respect through giving others’ their respect they deserve.
Several reasons may account for this phenomenon. Obviously, those who are likely to be respected always respect others at first. For instance, Confucius, a great philosopher of ancient times in China, once went to visit his teacher, Laozi. Despite his reputation and prestige, Confucius was very polite and showed a great respect to Laozi, and Laozi treated Confucius in a respective manner in return. Besides, respect is a necessary for people who are in need of esteem. Be they rich or not, respecting others is the only way leading to esteem.
To sum up, it is of great importance to keep in mind that respect is mutual. As for me, a contemporary college student, showing respect to others is always a principle I have insisted on in the process of getting along with people.
