點睛：第一句話中用了直接引語作賓語。第二句話是對第一句的肯定，破折號后的部分作了進一步的解釋。were reasonthe only judge in the creationism/evolution debate其實是省略if的虛擬條件句，相當于if reason were the only judge in the creationism/evolutiondebate。
考點歸納：如果虛擬條件句中的謂語部分含有were、had或should，可以將其放在句首，省略連詞if，變成倒裝句——這就叫做虛擬語氣的倒裝，是考研英語閱讀文章中常常出現(xiàn)的。

注意：在虛擬語氣的從句中，動詞be的過去時態(tài)一律用were，不用was。

如果我是你，就會去找他。
if he were here, everything would be all right.
如果他在這兒，一切都會好的。
