TO some, she was Princess Diana, a global human rights campaigner. But to Prince William and Harry, she was simply their mother. The two have organized a concert for Diana on July 1, which would have been Diana's 46th birthday, at London's Wembley Stadium.
Ten years ago, on August 31 1997, Princess Diana died in a car crash in a Paris tunnel. She and her companion were being followed by the photographers who went wherever she went. It was said that the tragedy happened when her drunk driver sped up in an attempt to get away from photographers.
Back then, William was 15 and Harry was 12. Even today, the two princes said her death had cast a permanent shadow over their lives. In an interview this month, Harry said: "I have always felt that she never went away."
However, it is not just their mother's death ― at the terribly young age of 36 ― that has stayed with them, but the way she died. Harry believes the mystery of Diana's death will never be solved: "Whatever happened in that tunnel, no one will ever know."
There is no doubt that the relationship between Diana and her sons was a very close one. They have both said that she was a very loving mother. Losing her was a terrible blow, but it must have made the princes' growing up all the more difficult.
Few children faced the pressures William and Harry faced. Because they are important members of the British Royal Family, they have had to do their "growing up in public". The media is very interested in everything they say and do ― particularly the romantic and the foolish things.

For some, Diana's death is one of the great unsolved mysteries of the modern age. The official story called her death an accident. But others think it was a conspiracy. They believe that members of the British Royal Family planned to have Diana killed because she was more popular than them. Diana always presented herself to the public as the victim of her husband Charles and the Queen ― and the public believed her.
