Unit 1 I Didn’t Take That In 我沒有把藥吃下去
A fellow who was rather slow on the uptake had been suffering from constipation, so the doctor provided him with some suppositories.
有位理解能力相當遲緩的老兄一直為便秘所苦，因此醫生給他一些利腸的栓劑。
A week later, the patient came back to tell the doctor that his condition had not improved.
一星期后病人回來告訴醫生，他的狀況尚未改進。
“I’m amazed,” said the doctor. “Have you been taking the medicine I prescribed for you?”
“我覺得好奇怪，”醫生說。“你有沒有采用我開給你的藥方呢？”
“What do you think I ‘ve been doing, shoving it up my ass?”
“你以為我做什么呢？難道要我把它們都塞進屁股里嗎？”
英語知識點解說：
1.uptake n. 理解
be quick/slow on the uptake 敏于／拙于理解
例：A：You're kind of slow on the uptake, aren't you?
（甲：你似乎腦筋轉得慢了一點，是不是呢?）
B: Huh?
（ 乙：什 么？）
2.stuffer vt. 遭受（痛苦、損失等）& vi. 罹患（疾病，與 from 并用）
suffering n. 苦難
suffer a big loss 遭受很大的損失
suffer from... 患有（某疾病）
例：The vicious youth suffered the consequences of his actions.
（那位無惡不作的年輕人嘗到了他的惡果。）
Dad has been suffering from hepatitis for 10 years.
（老爸患有肝炎達十年之久。）
3.constipation n. 便秘
4.provide vt. 準備；供給
provide sb with sth 提供某人某物
注意：
supply（提供）、furnish （ 提供 ）和 equip （使配備）均采用上列結構 ，與 with 并用。
例：Could you provide me with some information, please?
（請你提供我一些消息好嗎？）
My pharmacist supplies me with all the drugs I need.
（我的藥劑師給我所需的藥。）
Could you furnish me with a small loan?
（你可以借我一筆小錢嗎？）
The hall is equipped with a very good sound system.
（大廳裝有很好的音響系統。）
5.suppository n. 坐藥；栓
本文指軟化排便的藥劑，真的是要放入肛門內的，但卻全給那位老兄吃光。
6.improve vt. & vi. 改 善；進 步
improvement n. 改良
例：I've noticed a marked improvement in your English since you started reading Ivy League Analytical English magazine.
（自從你開始閱讀《常春藤解析英語》雜志后，我已注意到你的英文有顯著的進步。）
7.amaze vt. 使驚訝
amazing a. 令人驚奇的
amazed a. 感到驚奇的
be amazed at... 對……感到驚訝
例:What an amazing story! Whare did you hear it?
（這個故事真奇妙！你打哪兒聽來的
I'm amazed at your ignorance.
（你的無知真讓我感到訝異。）
8.take the medicine 吃／服藥
take the pill 吃藥丸
eat the soup 喝湯
吃藥一詞的“吃”或 要用 take ，不 用 eat ；此外喝飲料的動詞用 drink ，但喝湯卻要用eat the soup ，宜特別加以注意，之所以用 eat，乃是因為湯在西方國家中也是一道菜，而且大都為濃湯（如玉米濃湯、咖 雞肉面湯…… ），當然如果是在臺灣的自助餐廳喝湯的話，那些用白開水加鹽及味精的湯，用drink 應是正確無疑的，只是 eat the soup 在英文中已沿用許久，讀者只好入境
隨俗了。
9.prescribe vt. 開藥方
prescription n. 處方
例：Take the prescription to pharmacy and have it filled.
（把這個藥方拿去藥房配藥。）
The doctor prescribed some medicine for my stomachache.
（醫生為我的胃痛開了些藥。）
10.shove vt. ：推 ；擠
shove sth up... 將某物擠入／塞入……
=shove sth into...
