Toady “馬屁精”與“癩蛤蟆”有關系

早在17世紀，英國人普遍認為癩蛤蟆劇毒無比，誰要吃了癩蛤蟆，那簡直是找死！當然，有了這種想法，自然就不會有吃癩蛤蟆的人。正是利用大眾的這種恐懼心理，聰明的江湖郎中拿癩蛤蟆大大忽悠了一把。
他們讓聽話的“托兒”當眾吞吃癩蛤蟆，在托兒們“中毒”后“痛苦萬狀”的表情下，江湖郎中的“靈丹妙藥”派上了用場，及時搶回了托兒的命。想一想，恐懼癩蛤蟆的觀眾看了這生死表演，能不買那些天價神藥嗎？
隨著時間的推移，癩蛤蟆的劇毒神話早已不攻自破，那些吃癩蛤蟆、迎合郎中行騙公眾的托兒自然不會有什么好名聲。據載，1629年，toadeater開始被大眾接受，用來形容“奉承拍馬的寄生蟲”。Toady由toadeater衍生而來，可用做名詞（馬屁精）和動詞（溜須拍馬）。
