in 1921, during a raid on an illegal distillery in north carolina, a deputy sheriff was shot and killed. moonshiner david marshall williams was convicted of murder and sentenced to thirty years of hard labour. as a trusty in the blacksmith shop at his prison camp, williams was permitted to pursue gunsmithing. his designs drew the attention of colt firearms, whose representatives visited him in prison. he received a pardon from the governor after eight years' imprisonment. in 1940, williams created the m-1 carbine. he became wealthy, and patented more than 50 inventions.
