on 8 december 1941, the same day as the attack on pearl harbour, the japanese attacked wake island. during three straight days of japanese bombing, us marine and civilian defenders tricked the bombers into bombing fake positions.
believing that they had knocked out all american defences on the island, a japanese fleet went to take wake island without any air support. the marine commander waited until the ships were within artillery range, and then ordered his men to open fire, sinking one destroyer in less than 15 seconds. the fleet then retreated out of the gun range, only to be attacked by the four american airplanes that were still intact. the planes sank another destroyer, forcing the japanese to retreat even further. this was the first american victory in world war ii, though japan would take the island later that month.
