on 11 january 1944, james howard, a major in the us air force, was escorting a force of bombers on a raid on berlin when he and his flight of p-51 mustang fighters were ambushed by no less than 30 german luftwaffe fighters. his flight separated in the confusion and clouds.
for more than a half hour, howard single-handedly defended the heavy bombers, making furious climbing and diving attacks. three of his mustang's four machine guns jammed, but he continued blasting away with his remaining gun, shooting down as many as six luftwaffe fighters. not a single allied bomber was shot down.
the leader of the bombing formation later reported that"it was a case of one american against what seemed to be the entire luftwaffe. they can't give that boy a big enough award."
