during the peninsular war, british and french soldiers marched and countermarched through the spanish countryside, making it difficult for the local population to know which army was occupying them at any one moment.
on one occasion, as the british marched through a small market town, the inhabitants lined the streets and windows, and shouted "viva los ingleses (long live the english) !" until some of them were quite exhausted. one woman came out of her house in a great hurry, and began to shout "viva los franceses (long live the french) !" apparently, the spaniards used to cheer the french as well as the british army, but the woman had forgotten which army it was, and perhaps to her it was of little importance.
