the spanish-american war of 1898, which ended spanish rule in cuba and in which the us acquired the philippines, puerto rico and guam, demonstrated the military incapacity of both sides.
the american campaign in cuba was particularly chaotic. during the attack on san juan hill, the american troops had the assistance of a hot-air balloon, from which a lieutenant-colonel was supposed to spot enemy positions. it was a most ill-judged act. for if the spanish defenders had any doubts as to where the american troops might be in the jungle, the balloon served to give away the positions of the americans, and the spaniards responded by raking the area around the balloon with shrapnel. no one in the american ranks could return the fire or even see where it was coming from.
