at the battle of talavera between the british and the french in 1809, a british cavalryman, harry wilson, was seen engaged hand-to-hand with a french dragoon when a french officer delivered a thrust at his body and delivered it effectually. though he must have felt the sword in its progress, wilson kept his eye on the enemy in his front, and raising himself in his stirrups let fall on the frenchman's helmet such a blow, that the brass and skull parted before it, and the man's head was cloven asunder to the chin. they dropped dead together.
the brass helmet was afterwards examined by order of a british officer, who was astonished at the exploit. the cut was found to be as clean as if the sabre had gone through a turnip, not so much as a dent being left on either side of it.
