shaka, king of the zulus, was known to friend and foe alike as cruel and bloodthirsty. executions were a feature of daily life in his court. he condemned individuals for offences such as "smelling like a witch", sneezing when he was talking, or making him laugh when he wanted to be serious.
his erratic behaviour worsened with the death of his mother in 1827. he had thousands of zulus killed so that their families might mourn along with him.
even cows were killed so that their calves might know what it was like to lose a mother. massacres were carried out of those deemed insufficiently grief-stricken. apparently, he used his personal grief to mask the true motives behind an extensive political purge. in september 1828, he was stabbed to death in a coup.
