shaka, king of the zulus, was modern africa's most influential military leader who established zulu dominance of africa in the 19th century by revolutionising warfare on the african continent. he replaced light throwing javelins with shorter spears that could be used in close combat. he also devised a large shield, the left edge of which could be used to hook the enemy's shield to the right, exposing the enemy's ribs for a fatal spear stab.
he drilled his warriors rigorously and forced them to go bare-footed, which allowed them to run faster and surprise the enemy. he made them run on beds of thorns, and any man who cried cut in pain was killed.
