the year 1274 saw mongol ruler kublai khan's first invasion of japan. japan's samurai were no match for the fierce invaders, but a typhoon suddenly came upon the invasion fleet, and forced the mongols to retreat.
in 1281, kublai khan, who had already completed the conquest of china, mounted another invasion of japan. faced with a force more than three times as large as their own, the samurai were repeatedly defeated. just when it appeared that they would be extermined, another powerful typhoon suddenly slammed into the japanese coast. ships were dashed upon the rocks, and nearly all the invaders drowned.
